The Standard Salary Threshold
The general threshold for the Skilled Worker route is GBP 41,700 a year or the occupation's going rate, whichever is higher. The going rate is set per occupation, so two jobs with the same title can have different thresholds depending on the exact role code.
Lower Rates: GBP 33,400
A lower threshold of GBP 33,400 (or 70 percent of the going rate, whichever is higher) applies to jobs on the Immigration Salary List (ISL) and to new entrants, including anyone under 26, those moving into a skilled job after UK study, and those switching from a Graduate visa. Healthcare roles keep their own separate lower thresholds.
The Going Rate Rule
Every occupation on the eligible list has its own going rate, updated regularly. You must be paid the higher of the general threshold and the going rate for your specific code. Sponsors must confirm the salary on the Certificate of Sponsorship, and the role must genuinely meet the requirements.
Salary Rules for UAE Applicants
Your UAE salary does not count - the threshold applies to the UK job salary paid by your licensed sponsor. Under the pay-period framework applied from 8 April 2026, your salary is assessed over a set pay period, so part-time and variable-pay offers need careful checking. Note also the switch deadline of 31 December 2026 and extension deadline of 31 December 2027 if you are moving between UK routes.
How UAE Expats Can Qualify
Start by securing a Certificate of Sponsorship from a licensed UK employer. UAE experience is attractive to sponsors, and healthcare and other ISL roles give access to the lower thresholds. Studying in the UK first is a second path: UK graduates can switch to Skilled Worker as new entrants, which unlocks the GBP 33,400 level.
