The UK Skilled Worker Visa requires a Home Office-approved sponsor, a role at RQF level 3 or above, English at B1 level, and a salary meeting the general threshold of £26,200 or the occupation-specific going rate.
Sponsorship and eligibility requirements
To qualify from the UAE, you must hold a certificate of sponsorship from a UK employer with a valid sponsor licence. The role must be at RQF level 3 (A-level equivalent) or higher, and you need English proficiency at B1 level. The standard salary threshold is £26,200 per year or the occupation-specific going rate, whichever is higher. Certain health and education roles qualify for reduced salary thresholds. If your salary is below the going rate, tradeable points can compensate — up to 20 points for salary between £20,960 and £23,039.
- • Certificate of sponsorship from a Home Office-licenced sponsor
- • English at B1 level (IELTS 4.0 or equivalent test)
- • Salary: minimum £26,200 or occupation going rate
- • 70 points required, including tradeable characteristics
How to apply from Dubai and Abu Dhabi
Complete the online application through the UK Visas and Immigration portal, then book a biometric appointment at VFS Global in Abu Dhabi or Dubai. Submit your certificate of sponsorship reference number, valid passport, English test certificate, and bank statements showing £1,270 in maintenance funds held for 28 consecutive days. Standard processing takes 8 weeks. Priority service reduces this to 5 working days for an additional £500. Super priority service offers a decision within 24 hours at £1,000. The visa fee ranges from £625 to £1,423 depending on the role and duration.
Settlement and citizenship pathway
The Skilled Worker Visa leads to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after five continuous years of UK residence. You can apply for ILR once you have lived in the UK for five years and continue to meet the salary and employment requirements. British citizenship is available 12 months after ILR, subject to passing the Life in the UK test and meeting English language requirements at B1 level. Dependants accompanying you accumulate their own qualifying residence period and have full work and study rights throughout the visa duration.
